Please join us Saturday April 16, 2011 for a Symposium on the Heritage of Water

Nomination Grand Pré is celebrating the heritage of water and International Day for Monuments and Sites on Saturday, by organizing a symposium on the Heritage of Water at the KC Irving Environmental Science Centre, Acadia University on April 16 and a community event in Grand Pré Sunday, April 17.

International Day for Monuments and Sites is celebrated around the world on April 18th. Organized by ICOMOS (International Council on Monuments and Sites) and recognized by UNESCO, it is an opportunity to acknowledge the diversity of cultural heritage that is shared by humankind. The day raises public awareness around the efforts that are required to protect and conserve world heritage. Each year, International Day for Monuments and Sites celebrates a different aspect of our collective heritage. The 2011 theme is the heritage of water.

The symposium on Saturday, April 16 is hosted by Acadia University and is revolves around three themes: water as landscapes, water as a way of life, and water as transportation. Speakers include Peter Labor (Heritage River Program), Dr. Graham Daborn (Acadia University), Jenna Boon (Joggins Fossil Institute), Laurence Mawhinney, (Old Town Lunenburg World Heritage Site), Roy Bishop, (Acadia University (ret’d)), David Scott (Dalhousie University), Albert Marshall (Mi’kmaq community of Eskasoni), John Shaw (Bedford Institute of Oceanography) and Pam Buell (Parks Canada, Rideau Canal World Heritage Site).
